Example stories¶
One data story per kind of Special Node, plus a showcase with all of them.
They all use the Wikidata profile (kg="wikidata") and a Dutch Golden
Age theme: Rembrandt, Vermeer, Frans Hals, Jan Steen and Pieter de Hooch.
Each story folder contains:
index.md, the published story, exactly as the story editor writes it;<slug>.lodeon.zip, the editable project. Import it in the story editor (/lodeon/→ Import);assets/, for stories with media files.
| Story | Special Node | What it shows |
|---|---|---|
| SPARQL query | SPARQL Query | Vermeer's paintings, live; a query from the Visual Query Builder. |
| Plotly visualization | Plotly Visualization | Bar, pie and line charts from SPARQL, CSV and TSV. |
| RAWGraphs visualization | RAWGraphs Visualization | Rembrandt's paintings per decade, designed in RAWGraphs. |
| Leaflet map | Leaflet Map | Vermeer's collections worldwide (SPARQL), four towns (manual points), Rembrandt's move (GeoJSON). |
| Graph Explorer | Graph Explorer | Vermeer's neighbourhood in Wikidata. |
| IIIF object | IIIF Object | A gallery of SMK paintings found through Wikidata; one KMSKA manifest by URL. |
| Embedded remote content | Embed Remote Content | Wikidata Query Service map and bubble chart. |
| Media asset | Media Asset | The Night Watch, with its metadata. |
| Music notation | Music Notation | Ode to Joy and Frère Jacques in Plaine & Easie code. |
| Story metadata | Story Metadata | The project's metadata as a box in the story. |
| Special Nodes showcase | all of them | Every node, the rich-text features, and a node hidden from the output. |
Before you test¶
The stories assume this documentation is served with its example configuration (see Getting started):
- the profile must be named
wikidata, or thekg="wikidata"queries won't find it; - the embed story needs
https://query.wikidata.orginnodes.embed.allowedOrigins(fromconfig/lodeon.yml), or it shows a "not allowed" message instead of the frames; - the Visual Query Builder button appears only for profiles with a
sparnatural:configuration.
The SPARQL, IIIF, Graph Explorer and embed examples query Wikidata (or the museums' IIIF servers) live, from the reader's browser. Charts, maps and music keep the data they were made with, and show even when Wikidata is slow.
A test checklist¶
For a quick check of a SHMARQL installation, open the showcase and go through the sections:
- The Story Metadata box lists the author, licence and a download link.
- Both SPARQL tables fill in; the hidden third query is not shown.
- The Plotly bar chart and the RAWGraphs chart are drawn.
- The map shows markers coloured by country, with a legend and popups.
- The Graph Explorer shows Vermeer; clicking expands the node.
- The IIIF gallery loads paintings from the SMK and zooms.
- The embedded Wikidata map loads; the strip switches to the bubble chart.
- The Night Watch is shown with its caption and metadata table.
- The Ode to Joy score is engraved and plays.
Then import showcase.lodeon.zip in the
editor, choose Preview, and check that the preview looks the same.
Regenerating the examples¶
The examples were made with the story editor's own code, so they match what the editor writes. To change one, import its package, edit it, and Publish it with the same slug: the story folder is replaced.
